How long do imgur images last?

Last updated: 7 October 2026

There is no expiry date on an Imgur upload. There is also no guarantee it will still be there in five years. Both of those statements are true at the same time, and the gap between them is worth understanding before you host something important.

The short answer

  • No timer. Imgur does not delete images simply because time has passed.
  • Deletion on request works if you still hold the delete link or the account that uploaded the image.
  • Imgur can remove content that breaks its terms of service.
  • Imgur has already had one large purge. In April 2023 it announced it would delete inactive content that was not tied to an account, plus sexually explicit content, effective 15 May 2023. This was widely reported and drew heavy criticism because of the link rot it created in old forum posts and documentation.

The practical lesson from 2023: an anonymous, account-free upload is exactly the category that got swept away. Images attached to a real account survived.

What actually removes an image

CauseLikely?Can you prevent it?
Owner deletion (and delete link)Certain, if you use itKeep the delete link safe, or simply do not use it
Terms-of-service violationYes, for the categories Imgur policesOnly by not uploading that content
Inactive, unattached content being purgedThis has happened once, at scaleYes — upload while signed in to a real account
Regional blocksYes — Imgur blocked UK users on 30 September 2025No
Company or policy changeAlways possibleNo

The real risk is not deletion — it is link rot

A dead image link does not just fail for you. It fails for every future reader of the page where you put it. Forum threads, documentation, tutorials and support tickets going back years are full of broken image links for exactly this reason, and once the original file is gone there is no way to recover it from the URL alone.

If what you are hosting matters, three habits protect you:

  1. Keep your own copy. The upload is a copy, never the original. Archive the file locally or in cloud storage you control.
  2. Attach uploads to an account you will keep. The 2023 purge explicitly targeted content not tied to an account.
  3. Prefer a host whose economics you understand. Free hosting is paid for by advertising, and the terms can change at any time, as they did here.

What about the images you upload here?

Be equally clear about our own setup. This site forwards your file to ImgBB and returns ImgBB's direct link; we keep no copy on our own servers and cannot retrieve or restore an image on your behalf. So the same three habits apply, with one addition: keep the delete link that every upload returns, because that is the only mechanism you have for taking the image down again.
