Imgur alternative: what actually works in 2026

Last updated: 7 October 2026

If you are looking for an imgur alternative, the reason probably is not that you dislike Imgur. It is that a developer tool, a script or an app you depend on suddenly stopped being able to upload. That has a specific cause, and once you know it the options become obvious.

The thing that changed

Imgur stopped accepting new API applications. The registration page its own documentation still links to now redirects straight to the Imgur homepage, and the account settings page that used to host app registration is behind a login that no longer offers it. Developers across several large open-source projects have reported the same thing, and Imgur support does not handle third-party API questions.

The important part: applications registered before the change kept working. That is why sites that have been around for years can still hand out i.imgur.com links while a new project cannot. It is not a technical problem you can code around — there is simply no way to obtain a new client ID.

What that means if you just want a link

Nothing changed for you. If your goal is "put this picture somewhere and get a URL I can paste", any image host does the job. What matters is the handful of properties that make a link actually usable:

  • A true direct link. It must point at the image file, not at a viewer page. On Imgur that distinction is the difference between a picture and a broken thumbnail — the same trap exists everywhere. See direct link vs gallery link.
  • No account. Needing an email address to share a screenshot is friction you do not need.
  • A sane file size limit. Many hosts cap you at 1–5MB, which silently rejects phone photos. See imgur size and format limits.
  • A way to remove it later. If you cannot delete your own upload, you do not control it. See how to delete an imgur post or image.

The options, honestly compared

RouteGives youRequiresGood for
imgur.com web upload i.imgur.com link An Imgur account for regular use Posting to the Imgur community or Reddit with an imgur link
ImgurUpload i.ibb.co direct link, BBCode and HTML Nothing at all Screenshots, forum posts, bug reports, listings — anywhere the domain does not matter
Self-hosted storage A link on your own domain A bucket, a CDN, some setup Products and sites that need their own branding and full control
Build on the Imgur API i.imgur.com link A client ID — not obtainable for new projects Not currently an option

Be clear about the trade-off

An honest alternative admits what it is not. A quick imgur upload here produces an i.ibb.co link, not an i.imgur.com one. For blogs, documentation, support tickets, marketplaces and forum posts that makes no practical difference — the link renders everywhere a normal image URL renders. For places that specifically expect or prefer an Imgur address, it does. If you need an i.imgur.com URL, upload through imgur.com itself with an account.

If you run software that broke

If a script or self-hosted tool of yours stopped uploading, the honest answer is that you cannot fix it the way you used to. Your paths forward are:

  1. Switch the tool's image host to a service that still issues API keys.
  2. Point it at storage you control, so it never depends on someone else's signup policy again.
  3. Upload manually through a browser when the volume is low.

Option two is the only one that cannot be taken away from you by a policy change, which is worth weighing if the tool matters.
