Imgur upload not working? Work through it in this order
Last updated: 7 October 2026
Most upload failures fall into a small number of categories, and the fastest way through is to start with the cheapest explanation rather than the most dramatic one. Work down this list.
1. Read the error before you change anything
The message usually names the category: too large, wrong format, rate limited, or forbidden. Each has a different fix, and guessing wastes more time than reading. If there is no message at all and the upload simply never finishes, start at step 4.
2. The four failure categories
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| "File too large" | The file is over the host's per-image cap | Downscale to roughly 2000px on the long edge, then re-save as JPG at 80–85% quality |
| "Unsupported format" | HEIC from an iPhone, AVIF, or an SVG | Convert to JPG or PNG first |
| Refused, no useful reason, tiny file | Hosts reject empty or near-empty files as abuse | Check the file actually contains an image, then upload a real photo |
| Uploads work, then stop mid-batch | Rate limiting after repeated requests | Wait several minutes, then upload in smaller batches |
More detail on each of these, including the formats involved, is in imgur size and format limits.
3. If you are automating it, this is probably your answer
If an app, script or self-hosted tool stopped being able to upload, the cause is almost certainly not your code. Imgur stopped accepting new API application registrations, so anything that needs a fresh client ID cannot be set up any more. The failure looks like a credential problem and is not one. See imgur alternative for what to do instead.
4. If the upload hangs or the page never responds
- Try one file, not a batch. A single failing file in a queue can stall the rest.
- Turn off aggressive privacy extensions temporarily. Content blockers and script blockers are a common cause of a button that silently does nothing, because the request never leaves the browser.
- Check the connection on a phone hotspot. This separates a network problem from a site problem in about thirty seconds.
- Try a different browser once. If it works there, the problem is local to your profile or extensions, not the service.
5. When the upload succeeds but the image does not show
This is usually not an upload failure at all. It is the wrong kind of link: a viewer or album page instead of a direct file URL. Most forums and image fields will not render that as a picture — they show a link or a broken box. Direct link vs gallery link explains how to tell the two apart at a glance.
6. If none of that applies
Two possibilities remain, and neither is fixable from your side:
- The service is having an outage. Try again in an hour; these are usually brief.
- The service is blocked where you are. Imgur blocked users in the United Kingdom on 30 September 2025, for regulatory reasons. If you are in an affected region, no amount of local troubleshooting will help, and the only route forward is a different host.
If you just need the image online now
When you are blocked and need a link immediately, skip the diagnosis. A free imgur upload here takes about five seconds, needs no account, accepts JPG, PNG, GIF and WebP up to 32MB, and hands you a direct link you can paste straight into a forum, a ticket or a message.
