How to delete an imgur post or image
Last updated: 7 October 2026
Whether you can remove an image depends entirely on which of three situations you are in. Identify yours first, because only one of them has a guaranteed route.
| Your situation | Route | Reliable? |
|---|---|---|
| You still have the delete link from the upload | Open the link | Yes |
| You were signed in when you uploaded | Your account's images page | Yes |
| Anonymous upload, delete link lost | Ask Imgur support | Not guaranteed |
1. The delete link is the fastest route
Every upload response includes a one-time delete link in addition to the image URL. Opening it removes the image immediately, with no login involved. If you still have it — in your history, a notes file, or the browser tab you uploaded from — you are done in one click.
This is why you should save it. It is the only mechanism you control. On this site each upload returns its delete link alongside the image link, and we cannot recover an image for you afterwards because we keep no copy and no record of your upload.
2. If you were signed in
Sign in and go to your account's own image list. From there you can select an image and delete it, and the same page lets you remove an entire album or delete your account. Because you are authenticated, there is nothing to lose: the image is tied to your account and stays removable.
3. If you uploaded anonymously and lost the link
This is the awkward case, and it is worth being blunt: there is no self-service route. Without the delete link and without an account, nothing ties the image to you, so the service has no way to verify that it is yours. Your remaining option is to contact the host's support and explain the situation, including the image URL. Whether they act is at their discretion, and for Imgur specifically third-party API questions are explicitly out of scope for their support.
Removing an image from someone else's page
Deleting the image removes the file. It does not remove every copy of it. If you posted the same link on a forum, a chat or a social network, that platform may have cached or mirrored the image, and removing the original does not reach those copies. If you need something gone from a specific site, you have to ask that site.
Deleting a gallery post
A gallery post is more than the image: it has a title, a description, comments and votes. Deleting the image removes the content, but links to the gallery page may still resolve to a placeholder rather than a 404. That is normal, and there is no setting that makes a previously public URL disappear from every archive.
Things that are not deletion
- Making the post private stops it appearing in the public gallery. It does not break the direct link, so anyone holding the URL can still open the image.
- Removing it from an album takes it out of that album only. The image itself survives.
- Deleting your account removes the images attached to it, but this is the nuclear option and takes everything with it.
How to avoid needing this page
- Save the delete link the moment you get it. A notes app is enough.
- Upload while signed in to an account you intend to keep.
- Keep your own copy of the original file. Then a missing image is an inconvenience rather than a loss. See how long imgur images last.
